Guide to the Kekova and Sunken City Boat Trip

May 15, 20261 min read

Kekova is a protected area made up of an island between Kaş and Demre and the bays around it. The star of the region is the "Sunken City": the ruins of an ancient Lycian settlement that slipped underwater after earthquakes and now lines the shore beneath the surface.

Boat tours usually start from the village of Üçağız or directly from Kaş harbour. The route typically covers the Sunken City shoreline, Kaleköy (Simena) and a few swimming bays. Swimming over the Sunken City is forbidden for conservation, but as the boat draws close to shore you can clearly see the submerged steps and walls.

At Kaleköy, take the short walk up to the medieval castle on the hill; the view over the bay and island from the top is stunning. There are no roads for cars in the village, so time slows down here.

Which boat to choose? Glass-bottom boats are handy for seeing the Sunken City. For a calmer experience, pick a small gulet tour; if you want a lively party atmosphere, larger boats run too.

Tip: Bring a hat, sunscreen and water shoes. Swimming stops can be pebbly, and a snorkelling mask is great for seeing what lies beneath the surface.

Tours that set off early in the morning are both cooler and more pleasant, as the bays are still quiet.
